V(て) + てしまう (Regret)

  • A grammar pattern used to express that an action has been completed unintentionally or that something unfortunate or regrettable has occurred as a result of another action.
  • It is often used with the past form "てしまった" to express the speaker's feelings of surprise, disappointment, or regret.
  • Instead of the past form "てしまった", its short form "ちゃった" or "じゃった" is often used in casual conversations.

  • 社長(しゃちょう)のカメラを、踏(ふ)んで壊(こわ)してしまいました。
    I broke the president's camera by stepping on it.
  • 使用禁止(しようきんし)なのに、スマホを使(つか)ってしまいました。
    I used my smartphone even though it is prohibited to use it.
  • 玄関(げんかん)に、財布(さいふ)を忘(わす)れちゃった。
    I left my wallet at the front door.
  • 昨日(きのう)は宿題(しゅくだい)をしないで、寝(ね)てしまいました。
    Yesterday I didn't do my homework and fell asleep.
  • 道(みち)を間違(まちが)えてしまいました。
    I took the wrong road.
  • どうしよう！パスポートをなくしちゃった。
    What should I do! I lost my passport.
  • 間違(まちが)えて、君(きみ)のお茶(ちゃ)を飲(の)んじゃった。
