Kenjogo (Special form)

  • Special form is a form of kenjogo (謙譲語, humble language) in which there are no fixed rules for verb conjugation. Instead, it can be created for each verb by allowing it to undergo unique conjugation.
  • Note that it is preferred for verbs with special forms to use the special form rather than the basic form.

  • 明日(あした)、先生(せんせい)の家(いえ)に伺(うかが)います。
    I visit the teacher's house tomorrow.
  • 部長(ぶちょう)にお土産(みやげ)をいただきました。
    I received a souvenir from the manager.
  • お客様(きゃくさま)のチケットを拝見(はいけん)します。
    I will see your ticket.
  • 私(わたし)はアメリカから参(まい)りました。
    I came from America.
  • 明日(あした)9時(じ)に、会社(かいしゃ)へ伺(うかが)います。
    I will come to the company at 9 o'clock tomorrow.
  • 私(わたし)は先生(せんせい)に昨日(きのう)の授業(じゅぎょう)について伺(うかが)いました。
    I asked the teacher about yesterday's lesson.
  • 部長(ぶちょう)のお宅(たく)で奥様(おくさま)から、プレゼントをいただきました。
    I received a present from the director's wife at the director's house.
  • 何(なん)とお礼(れい)を申(もう)し上(あ)げたらいいか、分(わ)かりません。
    I don't know how to say thank you.
  • はい。次(つぎ)は、必(かなら)ずアメリカから、お土産(みやげ)を持(も)ってまいります。
    Yes. Next time, I will definitely bring you a souvenir from the US.
